Dear Friend,
It’s been an exciting month for us at NGYouthSDGs because we have made significant strides in enhancing youth participation in climate policy implementation, fostering grassroots community dialogues, and promoting sustainable innovation with the support of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Nigeria.
A Journey of almost a year culminated last week in the City of Abuja, Nigeria as we celebrated the impact and advancement of Climate Resilience with a close-out event for the “Empowering Youth Civil Societies to Build Stronger Communities in Nigeria” Project, an impactful initiative aimed at strengthening the capacity of youth and youth civil society organisations (CSOs) to understand and contribute to the implementation of Nigeria's National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
Project Impact and Achievements:
This transformative project made significant strides in amplifying youth participation in Nigeria’s climate governance through:
Training and Capacity Building: Directly trained 15 youth CSOs from a pool of over 300 applicants to enhance their understanding of the NAP and NDCs and empower them to engage in climate advocacy and policy implementation. These organisations later cascaded the training, indirectly reaching 178 youth-led groups across the five targeted states.
Widespread Online Engagement: Conducted a 4-week online training that engaged over 200 young Nigerians from 34 states, equipping them with essential knowledge on climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.
Community Dialogues: Hosted four stakeholder engagement forums in Kaduna, Nasarawa, Ondo, and Enugu States, bringing together 994 participants, including government representatives, community leaders, religious figures, CSO representatives, women’s groups, persons with disabilities (PWDs), farmers, and youth leaders. These dialogues informed the development of localised adaptation strategies tailored to the unique climate vulnerabilities of each state.
Resource Development: A Youth and Civil Society Organisations Guide to the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plan (NAP), a simplified learning toolkit that has been downloaded by over 300 stakeholders from youth organisations, academia, private sector, and government institutions was produced. An online resource hub to house project learning resources available for FREE for continuous learning was also developed.
Local Adaptation Plans of Action (LAPA): Developed four LAPA documents specific to Kaduna, Nasarawa, Ondo, and Enugu States, with insights from local stakeholders to ensure alignment with state-specific climate risks and resilience strategies. Key government agencies, including State Ministries of Environment and Natural Resources, formally reviewed and adopted these plans.
National Dialogue on Climate Priorities: Hosted the Nigeria Futures Summit, which provided a platform to define Nigeria’s climate priorities ahead of COP29.
Sustainable Innovation Lab (SIL): Launched a pioneering initiative to empower 12 young innovators, with a focus on gender balance, by providing mentorship, training, and seed funding of ₦5 million for the top four innovations aimed at enhancing climate resilience and supporting the implementation of Nigeria’s climate policies.
Case Study Development: Documented the success stories of 10 youth climate innovators, spotlighting their contributions to climate adaptation and mitigation efforts in Nigeria.

Our work, however, does not end here. This project may have been concluded, but the movement we have built continues. As Nigeria continues to advance its climate action and sustainability agenda, youth engagement remains essential in driving innovative solutions and policy advocacy. NGYouthSDGs is committed to equipping young changemakers with the necessary skills, resources, and platforms to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s climate resilience. By investing in youth-led initiatives, this project underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing climate challenges and ensuring a sustainable future for all. To our Funders, partners, and stakeholders, thank you for believing in the power of Nigerian Youth.
